HMOs emphasize preventive care while also offering comprehensive medical coverage. To receive care, you and your dependents must use doctors and facilities in the HMO network and, in some cases, you must designate a primary care physician who will coordinate your care.
Other characteristics of the HMOs generally include:
- No benefits for out-of-network care (except for emergency services)
- No annual deductibles (the HMOs cover most services in full after you pay a co-payment)
- No claim forms to file (in most instances)
For additional details on how an HMO works, you should refer to your HMO certificate of coverage.
